Learning Landscapes is a forward-thinking program at the University of Colorado Denver that connects the desi​gn and construction of urban public spaces with healthy initiatives.

Since 1998, in partnership with Denver Public Schools, we have transformed 93 neglected public elementary schoolyards into attractive and safe multi-use parks tailored to the needs and desires of their neighbors and communities.

Ninety-three schoolyards and counting! Through the generous support of Denver voters, foundation grants, and grassroots efforts, Denver's children have great places to play. Our mission is to build public places that support the wellness of children - through increased exercise, open space, community gathering places, gardens, and more.

Active Play Areas

New Orleans

Schoolyards provide an opportunity for the built environment to promote  physical activity for children and the surrounding community.  Colorado's recent surge in childhood obesity threatens the future health of the state.  Preventing and combating the childhood obesity epidemic requires a multi-faceted approach.​ Studies show that well-planned and equipped schoolyards increase physical activity. Learning Landscapes is working with Colorado school districts to design active play areas with the goal of increasing physical activity at schools across the state.
