DESIGN FABRICATION LAB

College of Architecture and Planning

As a student at the College of Architecture & Planning, you'll have access to this well-equipped and well-maintained 3000-square-foot facility that includes:

  • an After Hours Shop for assembly and wood storage area,

  • a large explosion-proof spray booth,

  • a 700-square-foot Digital Fabrication Lab that houses four 150 watt printers (one large format) and is open 76 hours a week,

  • a 3D printer to enhance your model-making capabilities.

The lab is staffed by student employees during the day and well into the evening to assist in the set-up and processing of your model parts.

Digital Fabrication Lab

The 1500-square-foot Machine Room houses the bulk of the woodworking tooling this lab has to offer. A partial list can be seen below. This area of the lab is open to students from 8:00am to 10:00pm Monday through Sunday and is also staffed by student employees. The Design Fabrication Lab is managed and supervised by a full time staff member who conducts all the required training for this facility and is available to students Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm. The expertise of the lab manager and employees is there to help you in creating the designs you envision.

A mandatory “Basic Safety Orientation,” conducted only at the beginning of the semester, is required for all students. Once attended, access to the facilities and all of its other available training and resources will be at your disposal. This course is an introduction to the college's and building’s safety polices as well as the proper use of personal safety equipment and safe practices on the smaller shop machines. You may then attend “Tool Seminars,” conducted at the beginning of each semester, to instruct you in the proper use of the larger floor mounted machinery as well as handheld power tools. The intention of these seminars is to familiarize you with each machine available in the shop's inventory and conceptual basis of their use.
