Nan EllinThe University of Colorado Denver welcomes the appointment of Nan Ellin, Ph.D., as dean of the College of Architecture and Planning and professor of urban and regional planning. Ellin was hired after a national search and began in this role on July 1, 2017.

Ellin comes to CU Denver from The University of Texas at Arlington, where she was founding dean of the College of Architecture, Planning & Public Affairs. At UT Arlington she oversaw unification of two schools into one college, a major building renovation, and the official launch of the new college in October 2015. The Institute of Urban Studies, of which Ellin is Executive Director, was awarded over $2 million in sponsored research over the last two years.

Dr. Ellin said, “From the heart of downtown Denver, the College of Architecture and Planning at CU Denver has been at the forefront of creating vital and vibrant places where all can thrive. I look forward to building upon this strong foundation and becoming part of the dynamic University of Colorado and Denver communities.”

Ellin’s research, creative work, teaching, community engagement, and administrative activities aim to transform contemporary challenges into opportunities for promoting urban, environmental, community, and institutional health and well-being.

“Dr. Ellin’s work bridges disciplines and professions, theory and practice, the classroom and community, and academic and general audiences, which makes her the ideal person to lead the College of Architecture and Planning,” said CU Denver Provost Roderick Nairn. “Her writings, research, and creative work are widely known and celebrated around the world. I am excited to see what she will contribute at CU Denver.”

Ellin previously served as professor and chair of the Department of Planning at the University of Utah, and in several roles at Arizona State University, including Planning Program Director, Director of the Urban & Metropolitan Studies Program, and Director of the PhD Program in Environmental Design & Planning in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. She has held faculty positions at New York University, University of Southern California, SCI-Arc, University of Cincinnati, Arizona State University, University of Utah, and The University of Texas at Arlington. Ellin holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University in Planning with a concentration in Urban Design, as well as MPhil in Planning and M.A. in Anthropology from Columbia University, and B.A. in Anthropology and Hispanic Studies from Bryn Mawr College.

Ellin succeeds Dr. Mark Gelernter, who retired at the end of June to Montana after 30 years at the University of Colorado, 14 of them as dean of the College of Architecture and Planning at CU Denver.​
