PGV Master of Criminal Justice

The Master of Criminal Justice with a concentration in Gender-Based Violence (MCJ-PGV) provides an interdisciplinary perspective on crime and the formulation of laws and codes, criminology, the criminal justice system, and women and violence. Greater numbers of specialized services in society related to the criminal justice system, education, law, advocacy are devoted to addressing the problem of interpersonal violence. These systems require well-educated professionals who carry a strong awareness of gender-based violence.

The MCJ-PGV is ideal for individuals interested in strengthening their knowledge of the criminal legal system's response to domestic and sexual violence, human trafficking and stalking, and related policies and services in society. Graduates take career routes into areas such as advocacy, police administration, health care, probation and parole, data analysis, rehabilitation, education, as well as bureaucratic positions in local, state, and federal agencies.

The MCJ-PGV degree plan requires a total of 36 credit hours of study that includes six MCJ core courses, four week-long intensive PGV courses, an elective, and a capstone project.  The domestic violence courses, which combine online learning with five, week-long intensive courses in Denver over two years, are as follows:

  • Nature and Scope of Interpersonal Violence
  • Psychology of Interpersonal Violence
  • Interpersonal Violence Law and Public Policy
  • Leadership, Advocacy and Social Change

Students interested this program must apply and enroll within the University of Colorado Denver's School of Public Affairs, and must adhere to all master degree program requirements. Students are admitted first to the degree program, and then to the PGV. As part of the application process, applicants interview with the program director, Barbara Paradiso, to discuss the unique nature of the concentration’s content, cohort structure, and scheduling.
