Myrriah Chavez (Mentor: Jessica Tyler) presented her poster entitled "Genomic Instability During Aging" at the International Colloquium: Stem cells, Organs, and Cancer in Tel Aviv, Isreal in May 2012.
Fourteen students presented posters at the annual Research and Creative Activities Symposium, held on Anschutz Medical Campus on April 28, 2012.
Undergraduate students Lindsey Overton and April Rempel (Mentor: Dr. Maria Nagel, Department of Neurology) presented posters at the Rocky Mountain Branch of the American Society for Microbiology meeting in Denver, CO on April 21, 2012. Lindsey presented a poster entitled: "Prevalence of VZV, HSV-1 and HSV-2 in Human Trigeminal Ganglia" and April presented a poster entitled: "Varicella Zoster Virus Expression in the Cerebral Artery of a Diabetic Subject."
Undergraduate student Tanya Liakhova (Mentor: Dr. Jefferson Knight, Department of Chemistry) presented her poster entitled "Molecular Interactions and Membrane Targeting of Granuphilin C2 Domains: A Preliminary Study" at the 56th Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society in San Diego in February 2012 and at the Tri-Beta Western Region District Meeting in Alamosa, CO in March 2012. Tanya won an award for the best poster at the Tri-Beta meeting. Her award included an all-expenses paid trip to present her work at the Tri-Beta National Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico in May 2012.

Undergraduate student
Sarah Gravilla received an
ARCS Scholarship for 2012-2013. The ARCS Founation provides scholarships to academically outstanding United States citizens studying to complete degrees in science, medicine and engineering, thereby contributing to the worldwide advancement of science and technology.
Program Coordinator Dr. Shawna McMahon was awarded the 2012 University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus Chancellor's Diversity Recognition Award for Faculty Leadership.
Graduate student Myrriah Chavez won a place on an MD Anderson T32 training grant beginning in May 2012.
Five undergraduate students, David Bergkamp (Mentor: Richard Allen), Nara Chon (& her co-PI Eun Kim; Mentor: Hai Lin), Zakaria Moumen (Mentor: Laima Stewart), Daniel Polanco (Mentor: David Pollock) and April Rempel (Mentor: Maria Nagel), received Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) awards this year. Students wrote proposals requesting funds up to $1200 per student to support their research. A committee of faculty and staff ranked LABCOATS proposals very highly in a competitive field.
Undergraduate student Tanya Liakhova received a first-place award for her poster presentation at the Tri-Beta Western Region District Meeting in March 2012.
