Laboratory Audits


The EHS Compliance Team conducts annual inspections for each lab on campus. Audits are typically scheduled with the lab staff in advance, but may occur unannounced or upon request. All labs on campus are responsible for maintaining compliance to applicable regulations and funding agency requirements (including those of EPA, CDC, NIH, DOD, etc.). Corrective actions may be identified during the audit, and these require correction and documentation by the lab staff. EHS staff works with all labs on campus to ensure issues of non-compliance are corrected and to maintain a safe lab environment.

Some specific items that the EHS auditor will check include:
  • On-the-job training forms present
  • Staff training up to date
  • Chemical storage (i.e. incompatible chemicals are physically separated; flammables outside flam cabinet do not exceed 2 gallons)
  • Vacuum system setup 
  • Biosafety cabinets inspected annually
  • Fume hoods inspected annually
  • Sharps and biomedical waste in appropriate containers
  • General lab safety and cleanliness
