A Leader that Inspires
CEO and Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver
Alumna, Professional MBA 2005
Back in the early 2000s, nonprofit leaders weren’t known for getting MBAs. When Heather stepped into her first day in bu siness school, she thought she might feel a little out of place.
That feeling changed during a class discussion about attracting and retaining employees. Heather brought in her personal experience to explain how she found success in creating a sense of mission and a healthy culture, a big lesson that the business world was just beginning to pick up on.
Since graduating, Heather applied the skills she gained at CU Denver to successfully lead a complex organization, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, into one of the largest residential builders in Denver.
“Being able to go to school and get my MBA at night, and then being able to put what I was learning into practice literally the next day, was the most important way to learn and understand how to manage and lead.”
Even though she runs the nonprofit like a business with over $19 million in revenue last year, she measures success a little differently. She sees success in the heart of their mission, helping hundreds of families realize their dream of homeownership.
