Degree Requirements

Required Courses

Core courses are required for all graduate students. Students who are officially admitted to the program are required to follow a sequential plan. SOCY 5000, Proseminar, must be taken in the first fall semester. Students must take SOCY 5014, Classical Sociological Theory, before taking SOCY 5015, Contemporary Sociological Theory. Similarly, SOCY 5024, Research Methods must be taken before SOCY 5183, Quantitative Data Analysis.

Core Course Requirements (15 credit hours)

  • SOCY 5000, Professional Seminar
    All MA students are required to take this course their first semester.

    5014 must be completed before taking 5015

Elective Credit Requirements (15 hours)

Students can take an unlimited number of sociology graduate seminars (i.e., 5000 level, stacked or not) to fulfill their 15 elective credits or a combination of the following:

  • Independent study: maximum six credits
  • Graduate level courses in other departments: maximum six credits
  • Internship: maximum three credits
