Ways Students Can Get Involved
Students are invited to participate in the Journal in one of three ways.
1) Write great papers!
Who is eligible?
All undergraduate and graduate history students enrolled at University of Colorado Denver.
What's involved?
A professor who assigned a paper as a class requirement will approach you about submitting it on your behalf, with your permission, if he or she feels that your paper is strong enough to warrant submission to the Journal for review. Though individual professors must formally submit your paper, if you know you would like to have a paper published in the Journal, speak with your professor, early and often, throughout your research and writing process. Let your professor know that you are hoping to write a paper that could be submitted and, potentially, published. Your professor will usually have excellent ideas to offer as you work toward this goal.
Expected time commitment:
As much time as it takes to write a great paper. You are already engaging in this process if you are hoping to achieve a good grade. So why not strive to make your paper strong enough for submission at the same time?
2) Become an Assistant Editor
Who is eligible?
All graduate history students enrolled at University of Colorado Denver.
What's involved?
Assistant editors help read submissions and vote on which papers will be published. They partner individually with the author of the paper to which they have been assigned. They also attend two to three short workshops offered by the UC Denver Writing Center. These workshops help our editorial team build and maintain consistency in guiding authors through the editing process. Working as an Assistant Editor is a great way to develop and apply your skills as a historian. You will have the satisfaction of helping a fellow student walk through the process of preparing his or her paper for publication. And you will be able to include your experience with the Journal on future resumes, applications for grants and scholarships, etc.
Expected Time Commitment:
2 - 6 hours in the Fall semester, 10 - 15 hours in the Spring semester
To apply now, click on the link below and download the application. Please send the completed application to: Dr. Pamela Laird or deliver hard copies to Tabitha Fitzpatrick on the 5th floor of the King Center. Along with the completed application, please ask two professors to email letters of recommendation on your behalf to Dr. Laird’s email address above.

3) Become a Senior Editor
Who is eligible?
All graduate history students who have served at least one year as an Assistant Editor and who did not serve as Senior Editor in the previous year.
What's involved?
Students who are appointed as Senior Editor may choose to apply to be Senior Editor more than once, but not hold this post for two consecutive years. As in the case of Assistant Editorships, serving as the Senior Editor for the Journal builds experience and showcases your skills as a team coordinator and as a historian. This experience makes an excellent addition to future resumes and applications.
Expected Time Commitment:
40 - 50 hours total (approximately 10 hours in the fall and the remaining hours in the spring)
Contact a faculty advisor (see Contacts & Resources) if you wish to express interest in serving as Senior Editor.
