Mentor Middle School Students


Scholarship for Spring 2014

Earn a $1,000 scholarship for Spring 2014 as a mentor to middle school students.

Looking for a fun and easy way to earn some extra money and get involved in the community? Be a mentor to 1 – 3 exceptional middle school students who have an
interest in math, science and research, and who want to work with CU Denver graduate students!

Requirements

  • Visit a middle school once a month (usually in the afternoon) to meet with your group. Visit months will be February, March, April and May.
  • Communicate with your group (middle school students and teacher) regularly through Google hangout, facetime, or other online communication medium.
  • Guide your mentees through math or science activities of your choosing. This can be a mini research project, giving them a tour of your lab, letting them sit in on a class with you, or other fun and educational activities.

Eligibility

  • Must be a graduate student at either the UC Denver Downtown or Anschutz Medical Campuses in applied STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics)
  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the US.
  • Have a GPA of 3.2 or greater

  • Name, major, year in program, and research area or thesis topic
  • Statement of Purpose – 2 page, double spaced essay about you, why you chose your field, and your motivations to be a mentor
  • Unofficial copy of your transcripts
  • Name and contact information for a professional or academic reference
