A Method for Achieving Covariate Balance in Cluster Randomized Trials

Studies implementing quality improvement and other interventions in primary care settings often randomize at the practice rather than patient level. Imbalance in the study groups can be a serious problem in cluster randomized trials (CRTs), especially if there is imbalance in practice level variables that can affect the implementation of the intervention or key outcome variables of the trial. Covariate constrained randomization approaches have been suggested to address this problem. In this presentation Dr. Dickinson will discuss the use of a balance criterion approach to achieve balance in CRTs.
