Performance Improvement

Performance improvement (PI) activities describe structured, long-term processes by which a physician or group of physicians can learn about specific performance measures, retrospectively assess their practice, apply these measures prospectively over a useful interval, and re-evaluate their performance.

As a provider of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, the Office of Continuing Medical Education of the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine is committed to offering PI CME activities in support of healthcare providers as they make changes to their practices.  The Office of Continuing Medical Education and COPIC are continuing their partnership to provide a self-directed Performance Improvement activity for physicians and mid-level providers who participate in their COPIC Practice Quality Site Visit.  There is no charge to Colorado and Nebraska COPIC insured physicians and/or mid-level providers for obtaining this CME credit.  Completing this activity will require the following:

  • There are three stages (Stages A, B, and C) and 5 credits can be earned for completion of each stage.  Please follow the links below to access each stage, the required activities, and the documentation required for successful completion of each stage.
  • Physicians or mid-level providers who complete all three stages in sequence may receive an additional 5 credits, for a maximum of 20 CME credits for the PI CME activity.
  • All of the required forms are available on this website.  Form more information, please contact Pam Welker (303/724-3551).
  • Activity dates are January 1, 2012, through December 31, 2013.

Learning from Current Practice Performance Assessment

Assess current practice using identified performance measures, either through chart
reviews or some other appropriate mechanism.

COPIC reviewers will conduct the site visit auditing six charts for each provider which includes the Level 1 guidelines. These are the performance measures used for criteria. Providers should be involved in the process by learning what Level 1 guidelines are being assessed, how data is collected, and by participating in the review summation and the results of data. It is not intended that physicians do the data collection.

After completion of Stage A (Practice Quality Site Visit), you are eligible for 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Complete and submit the forms for Stage A.

Learning from the application of PI to patient care

Implement an intervention based on the performance measures selected in Stage A using suitable tracking tools (e.g., intervention plan).

Upon completion of the Practice Quality Site Visit audit, the COPIC reviewers will discuss and explain any Level 1 guideline deficiencies. If areas that need improvement are identified, then an intervention plan and a letter of acknowledgement signed by the provider supporting participation in the review summation are submitted to COPIC.

After completion of Stage B (Intervention Plan and Letter of Acknowledgement), you are eligible for 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Complete and submit the forms for Stage B.
