Why women's shoes and not men's? Women are the vast majority of the patients we see with shoe-induced symptoms. It is not necessarily the length or the width of the shoe, but the style. What is the shape of the shoe vs. the shape of the individual foot? It seems that most women buy their shoes in order to keep their heels from slipping up and down. One technique for doing this is to jam a rectangular set of toes into a triangular toebox. This prevents the foot from sliding forward and the heel from slipping. The jamming of the toes is that much worse in high heels.
Ill-fitting shoes are not healthy, no matter how they appear. Narrow toed, high-heeled shoes do not promote normal foot and leg function. Improper shoes will eventually cause foot pain and foot disease.
