Research

My research examines how nutrition and other modifiable factors contribute to the development of chronic disease (diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease) in vulnerable populations. I use observational methods to identify key associations, and then use these findings to develop prevention strategies with potential for widespread dissemination and implementation.

Ongoing projects include:

  • Examining how prenatal/postnatal behaviors and lifestyle factors (nutrition, physical activity, mental health) predict maternal and child health outcomes in The Healthy Start Study (PI Dabelea)
  • Evaluating feasibility of a clinic-based nutritional prenatal intervention for improving maternal-child health among urban, low-income women (PI Sauder)
  • Evaluating the effectiveness and sustainability of a lifestyle intervention to reduce diabetes risk factors among American Indian children (Co-PIs Dabelea, Sauder)
