Research

I am a biobehavioral health researcher who studies how nutrition and other modifiable factors contribute to obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases in women and children. I use observational and intervention methods to identify and test health behavior prevention strategies that have potential for widespread dissemination and implementation. On-going projects span the transgenerational cycle, including pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adolescence, and the child-bearing years.

Ongoing projects include:

  • Examining how prenatal/postnatal behaviors and lifestyle factors (nutrition, physical activity, mental health) predict maternal and child health outcomes in The Healthy Start Study (PI Dabelea)
  • Evaluating the effectiveness and sustainability of a lifestyle intervention to reduce diabetes risk factors among American Indian children (Co-PIs Dabelea, Sauder)
  • Improving reach and effectiveness of the National Diabetes Prevention Program among women of child-bearing age (PIs Sauder, Ritchie)
  • Understanding how dietary behaviors are related to glycemic control and disease progression among individuals with youth-onset diabetes (SEARCH for Diabetes in youth Study  https://www.searchfordiabetes.org/dspHome.cfm)

The Remote Food Photography Method: Pilot Testing a Novel Technology-based Measure of Dietary Intake in School-age Children
This study will assess the feasibility of measuring dietary intake in school-age children with the remote food photography method, with a focus on performance relative to the ASA-24 and identifying opportunities to improve accuracy. It is a pilot study funded by the Duke University Coordinating Center of the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) consortium.
