Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery

In the Section of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, our physicians have been performing a number of innovative urogynecology techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic floor disorders. The division is the largest group of urogynecologists within Colorado.

Both basic and advanced urodynamic testing, including video urodynamic testing, is available to evaluate women with urinary symptoms, disorders, and pelvic floor disorders. There are many different urogynecology treatments available for incontinence, urogynecology disorders and pelvic organ prolapse. For other types of incontinence and pelvic floor disorders, outpatient or inpatient surgical procedures can be performed, including reconstructive pelvic surgery. For urinary incontinence different types of outpatient procedures include tension free vaginal tape (TVT) procedure, transobturator tapes, and sacral neuromodulation. To treat pelvic organ prolapse, short stay procedures include laparoscopic and robotic-assisted sacral colpopexy and vaginal reconstruction with and without mesh implantation. Innovative office procedures include Botox intramuscular (bladder) injections for severe urge incontinence and periurethral and transurethral bulking agents (coaptite) injections for stress incontinence.

Since its establishment in 1949, the Department of OB/GYN has pursued a mission of unlocking basic science and pursuing clinical research.  Clinical and basic urogynecology research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center is carried out by our professional staff of physicians and scientists, who offer expertise in every gynecology subspecialty area. Basic research involves experiments and studies that occur in a laboratory setting. Clinical trials, on the other hand, rely on the participation of human volunteers in order to answer questions about treatments for diseases and conditions.  Research conducted within the Section of Urogynecology involves a spectrum of efforts, including:

  • Searches for gene pathways that cause pelvic organ prolapse
  • Study of simulation in minimally invasive laparoscopic sacral colpopexy for teaching surgical trainees
  • Determining quality benchmarks for prolapse and incontinence procedures.
