My teaching and research experience began at Georgia State University (GSU), where I served as an Assistant Professor teaching undergraduate and graduate nutrition courses while conducting research in tailored web-based weight intervention programs. In addition to my responsibilities at GSU, I also served as a Health Scientist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity in Atlanta, GA. My work at the CDC included "translational" research writing, which focused on evaluating the most current research in the area of overweight/obesity and chronic disease and summarizing the findings in written materials targeted for health professionals and the lay public.
Prior to joining the Department of Family Medicine, I served as Research Director for America On the Move (AOM) at the University of Colorado Denver, Center for Human Nutrition (CHN). My work with AOM and James O. Hill, PhD at the CHN entailed new program development and research looking at a tailored "small changes" approach to achieving and maintaining healthy lifestyles.
Currently, I am the Education Specialist for Medical Student Education in the Department of Family Medicine. My focus is to provide medical students exposure to preventive health measures for reducing chronic disease risk. My passion is teaching medical students evidence-based nutrition and physical activity lifestyle change options for chronic disease management
My past research has focused on obesity and chronic disease, specifically on how making small lifestyle changes can add up to significant positive changes in one’s health. My current research interests include developing new methodologies for enhancing medical student education in the areas of nutrition and preventive health.
I am currently the 2010-2011 Past-Chair of the Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group (WM DPG). The WM DPG is a 4700+ member subgroup of the American Dietetic Association. Our members are Registered Dietitians and nutrition professionals specializing in weight management.
