Dr. Bucca joined the University of Colorado, Department of Ophthalmology in 2007 as an optometrist specializing in diabetic retinopathy. He is an Assistant Professor and is dually appointed within the Departments of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics. He is the Eye Clinic Chief at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.
Dr. Bucca has also held academic appointments at the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) form 2002-2007. As Outreach Faculty for SCCO, he practiced in Shiprock, NM within the Public Health Service/Indian Health Service system as Chief of Diabetic Eye Care, providing care to the underserved Navajo population. Also functioning as the Director of Optometry Externship and Residency Program, he has effectively trained hundreds of young doctors throughout the US and abroad in the field of ocular disease and primary eye care.
Dr. Bucca has a decade of experience diagnosing and managing eye disease in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic patients. His practice philosophy is hinged upon patient education, which he believes is the cornerstone of successful treatment of any illness.
