Pediatric Dermatology Faculty

Clinical Services Overview The Pediatric Dermatology service is the only comprehensive pediatric dermatology evaluation and management program in the Rocky Mountain area. In addition to general pediatric dermatology, multiple other services are offered including laser therapy of vascular birthmarks and other vascular conditions, pediatric dermatologic surgery, hyperhidrosis evaluation and treatment including iontophoresis, phototherapy with Narrowband UVB, UVA-1 and PUVA and contact dermatitis evaluation and treatment. There are specialty clinics for epidermolysis bullosa, wound healing and vascular malformations. We also have the only Dermatopathologist specializing in Pediatric Dermatopathology.

Research Overview - The existing research in the Section of Dermatology has focused on sun protection in childhood; the role of sun exposure and phenotype in the development of moles in childhood; improving outcomes for laser treatment of vascular lesions; developing expertise in the clinical management of rare vascular lesions and understanding the etiology of congenital melanocytic nevi and neurocutaneous melanosis.

Over the last 2 years we have added 3 new faculty members and markedly increased our research efforts. These now include: wound healing in epidermolysis bullosa and other chronic non healing wounds of childhood; the increasing incidence and decreasing age of onychomycosis; improving outcomes in morphea and adolescent hyperhidrosis;  predicting chronicity and systemic involvment in mastocystosis; and differentiation of Spitz nevi from melanoma.
