Heather Callahan became the first Director of Intellectual Property for the Gates Center in September, 2013, focused on providing strategic advice regarding patent protection and commercialization. Heather began working with the Gates Center in November, 2012, initially providing advice regarding intellectual property through her consulting company Divetank Strategies, LLC. Heather is also a Colorado Single Client Attorney for Taiga Biotechnologies, Inc., a stem cell company closely affiliated with the Gates Center. In addition to law and intellectual property, Heather’s scientific background is in molecular biology and biochemistry.
Heather has been practising in intellectual property for 16 years. Prior to relocating to Colorado, Heather was the Head of Patent Development for Intellectual Ventures’ Invention Development Fund, and resided in Asia. She has also worked at two biotech start-ups, Hollis-Eden Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Genset Corporation. She began her law career at Lyon & Lyon while going to law school at night at the University of San Diego. Before her legal career, she was a Research Scientist in infectious disease at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in the US and Brazil. She has a B.A. from Tufts University, a Ph.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina, and did her Post-Doc at Harvard Medical School.
