This innovative program is bridging the talent gap

The Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) program is designed to produce a new generation of professionals with the critical thinking skills, specialized knowledge and managerial acumen that insurance companies seek in their leaders. Launched in Spring 2011 as a specialization in the undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree, the program expanded to the graduate level in Fall 2011.

Risk is a pervasive reality that traverses all industries and types of organizations. With the recent global financial upheavals, the difference between success and failure is increasingly linked to an organization’s ability to manage and minimize risk, while finding ways to do business more effectively.

Students in the undergraduate RMI program gain:

  • An in-depth understanding of the benefits insurance provides as well as the creation of insurance contracts and internal operations

  •

  • Valuable tools and methods for identifying, measuring and handling both insurable and uninsurable risk

  •

  • Hands-on exposure, through internships provided by the local industry, that allows students to apply their knowledge to the work environment

An aging workforce means that in the next ten years, more than 50 percent of Baby Boomers will retire, leaving companies with upper management positions to fill. This program was designed to give tomorrow’s executives the first-hand experience and the preparation to take on the complex challenges facing the insurance and risk management industry. This unique degree program gives graduates the edge needed to make them immediately effective in the work place, a benefit to both the graduate and the employer.
