Beyond the Textbooks
In her senior year, Business major Kelsey Martin pursued a marketing internship with Westword, a print and online resource for what's happening in Denver.
"I wanted to feel out the 'real' world – to get experience and a better idea of what marketing is all about,” Kelsey said. "I also used the opportunity to begin to figure out what I want to do in the marketing industry."
Kelsey described her experiences as "amazing." She was involved with many aspects of their marketing program, including:
- Coordinating the Street Team - creating action plans, preparing swag bags, inputting leads from the events and uploading pictures to westword.com
- Updating their social networking sites to keep them fresh and relevant
- Helping to set up and working at Westword's February event, Artopia
- Promoting the Westword Music Showcase
The environment was welcoming and collaborative. She was motivated by the opportunity to voice her opinions and suggestions—and be taken seriously.
"It was exciting, because every day was different,” she commented. “There were so many aspects to promoting the publication and the events. It was ever changing."
While her classes provided the foundation for her marketing knowledge, Kelsey learned that there’s no substitute for on-the-job experience . Watching projects actually “come together” was an eye opener, as was seeing how creative and innovative ideas can propel a brand or event forward.
Kelsey graduated in May 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a dual major in Marketing and International Business.
