Teaching Philosophy

My primary student-related teaching objective is to provide students with multiple perspectives on the behaviors and performance of organizations and organizational members. I do not tend to propose a "right" answer to questions posed in the classroom, but rather encourage students to see the possibility of multiple answers, depending on one's perspective. Another teaching objective is to foster a learning environment in which every class member's ideas and concerns are a valuable part of our learning experience. I believe that I have been successful in reaching these objectives. My students have brought and continue to bring a rich and varied set of experiences and concerns to class discussions. Class discussions tend to be highly interactive.

Another set of teaching objectives has to do with my own development as a teacher. I want to stay fresh and up-to-date. I believe that I have been successful in moving toward this objective as well. I continuously try to improve my teaching by refining and updating material and by expanding into new areas. My courses are heavily based on current materials from the business press, and I replace over half of all academic articles in my reading packets every few years to remain on the cutting edge of management theories.
