SPECIFIC AIMS/RESEARCH GOALS:
Core Research Area C conducted pilot work to submit an R01 application to investigate and intervene with suicidal behavior among American Indian adult jail detainees/inmates.
The research design included 5 steps.
- to study local jurisdictional issues and determine systems structure through interviews, observation, and paper review;
- to develop and convene study work group meeting;
- to obtain site approvals;
- to develop the site visit protocol and data collection methods using semi-structured interviews, observation, and record reviews;
- to pilot these procedures and submit an R01 application.
Sixty-seven American Indians were interviewed (46 males, 21 females); 36 non-Indians were interviewed (28 males, 8 females). All were associated with detention facilities on or near the reservation.
No specific measures were utilized other than project generated semistructured interviews and record review.
