Demetrius Abshire

Demetrius Abshire joined the Washington State University College of Nursing as an assistant professor in 2015 after receiving his PhD at the University of Kentucky. His research focuses on the relationships among psychosocial health, health behaviors, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in high-risk populations. He is particularly interested in obesity and associated health outcomes. Current lines of research include (1) identifying the reasons why rural residents are more likely to be obese than urban residents; (2) promoting the self-management of physical activity in rural dwelling older adults with CVD; 3) examining relationships among psychosocial stressors, cortisol, and body weight in rural and urban dwelling adults; and (4) understanding behavioral and psychosocial determinants of CVD risk in college students.
