Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics

Grant Application Peer-Review Process

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics has an internal grant review process to help faculty members submit more competitive grant proposals to national funding agencies.  The goal of this initiative is to increase the chances for BMG faculty to compete successfully for limited funding.  While not mandatory, participation by all faculty in this internal grant review is highly encouraged.

A committee consisting of BMG faculty will evaluate BMG faculty grant applications planned for submission to national agencies.  The process is:

  • Up to 3 months before grant application deadline: faculty are encouraged to brain-storm and plan potential grant proposals with colleagues.
  • 3 months (12 weeks) before grant application deadline: submit specific aims (one page or less) of grant application to Anne.
  • Mark will recruit 4 faculty members to review each grant application; one person will be appointed to write a summary statement of the committee’s deliberations.  All faculty in the Department are expected to participate 1-4 times per year.  Faculty outside the Department may be recruited.
  • 10 weeks before grant application deadline: the review panel will provide feedback on the specific aims.
  • 5 weeks before grant application deadline: submit final draft of grant application to Anne.
  • 3 weeks before grant application deadline: The peer-review panel will provide the applicant with a constructive critique, using a NIH-like peer-review format and summary statement.
