Academic Information Systems and Development (AIS&D)


The team members of Academic Information Systems and Development (AIS&D) manage installation and maintenance of all ATEL centrally supported systems including Blackboard, Adobe Connect (downtown), the Shared Web Application Environment (SWAE) and the campus content management system running on the Microsoft SharePoint system infrastructure. In addition, development services include custom code solutions for product extensions, customizations and integration with other campus systems such as the student information system as well as custom application development for a variety of university clients.

With experience in private IT consulting, learning management system support, user support, systems administration and application development, Bernie's experience spans many technical disciplines. Beginning with the UCHSC School of Nursing as a student worker in 1999, he has successfully sought out and acquired knowledge and experience with many specific IT systems while moving through a series of positions with UCD. He is now leading the Academic Information Systems and Development team which is responsible for the operational and technical support of the UCD public web servers, learning management and other central academic systems, as well as the development of many other ATEL related systems. He continues to take an active professional interest in web application development and can often be found researching, developing and testing new technologies in support of ATEL's mission.

Steve has a Masters' degree from Creighton University in Computer Systems Management (1993) and has been working in higher education since 1994. He designed and taught several classes for new computer users, teaching online and in the computer lab. Steve is a Blackboard certified system administrator and has been working with Blackboard since 2001. He is also on the team that administers the SharePoint and content systems.

Allen worked with Microsoft Servers since 1997, working in various private and government as a Systems/Server  Administrator. His last position as a Systems Administrator was as an Enterprise Server Administrator for I.C.E. (Immigrations, Customs, and Enforcement). His past focus has been in Microsoft Active Directory and Exchange email systems, but has included other technologies such as backup systems, Blackberries, Antivirus systems, SCOM (System Center Operations Manager) and he is moving towards SQL server and Clustering server solutions.  Allen now works in the Academic Information Systems and Development team as  the System Infrastructure Administrator, under the guidance of Bernie Johnsen. Allen's favorite pastimes include wine-making, motorcycling on his Honda Valkyrie and organic gardening."

Having worked in both a corporate environment and owning and managing a successful consulting business, Chris brings over 20 years' experience with contact management and CRM systems. Initially joining the team to assist in the deployment of Microsoft Dynamics CRM for the CU Online helpdesk, Chris has expanded the deployment to include all departments within ATEL and additional teams located at AMC. "I am looking forward to continuing to improve the product we have put in place and will be upgrading to the latest version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM in the Spring 2011."

John uses his knowledge of the Microsoft software development tools to support SharePoint and develop custom software solutions as needed. He acquired this knowledge while working in industries such as aviation, baking, education, health care and public utilities.

Gail has been with the university for eleven years, starting out in the HR Department, moving to IT Services and finally landing in ATEL. Her main duties within the Academic Information Systems & Development team include administering the MOSS< SWAE and SP 2010 servers and customer support. Gail's favorite pastimes are walking and playing with her three dogs and photography.

Shilpa is working as a web developer handling SharePoint and .net development. She handles the MOSS 2007/SP2010 new feature enhancements, supporting and customizing current features. She recently graduated from University of Colorado Denver with a Masters in Information Systems and has a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering. Prior work experience includes working for German based Avaya-Tenovis Company for three years as a developer. She likes learning German and has completed German Language Level 1 certification awarded by Max Mueller Institute.

Before joining CU, Darko worked in K12 and in corporate environment as a Systems Administrator and Application Support. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems Security and is always working on expanding his knowledge in all aspects of IT. His current position is on a team that administers Blackboard, Microsoft Dynamic CRM, SharePoint and Adobe Connect. When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with his two dogs, photography and biking.
