The Colorado AHEC Program in cooperates with school districts to offer health career exploration programs for kindergarten through 8th grade statewide. Summer health career exploration programs are available for grades 9th – 12th.

9th-12th Health Career Exploration Summer Programs

Aurora LIGHTS Health Institute

This program is offered by Central Colorado AHEC and provides a rigorous six-week program for 10th-12th grade students. This includes four weeks of intensive math, science, writing and Health Career Planning. The final two weeks residential experience provides on-site Career Education Learning Experiences, Job Shadowing with health care provides at the Anschutz Medical Campus, Metropolitan Community Provider Network and other community health care providers. Colorado Rural Health Scholars Program

This program is a unique four-week educational opportunity on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Three days each week, the students participate in lectures and labs given by Anschutz Medical Campus faculty and staff. The goal of these labs and lectures is to present various aspects of health and medical careers, as well as to provide hands-on practical scientific training. For two full days each week, students volunteer at local hospitals. These volunteer positions allow students first hand clinical experience. For more information call 303.724.6407.

Pre-Collegiate Program

The Pre-Collegiate Development Program (PCDP) at the University of Colorado Denver is an academic enrichment and support program designed to motivate potential first-generation (neither of whose natural or adoptive parent(s) received a baccalaureate degree), and/or underrepresented students in higher education complete a college preparatory curriculum and pursue a college education. The Program will offer students in grades 9 through 12, the opportunity to engage in a wide range of Pre-Collegiate activities throughout the academic year. The academic year component will offer students monthly Saturday Academies consisting of study skills and career orientation workshops, class selection, tutoring and a variety of cultural enrichment experiences. Summer Health Careers Institute

The mission of the Summer Health Careers Institute is to encourage underrepresented high school students from all regions of the state to pursue a career in health care. By fostering high academic performance, identifying and utilizing available resources, mentoring and enhancing social skills through university-based programs and activities, the institute seeks to facilitate the transition from high school to college and increase the student’s potential for successful completion of health professions.
