University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
Stephen is in his first year of medical school. He was accepted to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus School of Medicine Rural Track. Stephen is doing well and plans to graduate in May 2014. His future plans are to practice rural Colorado. Stephen is midway through his first year of medical school and is still planning to graduate in 2014. As part of the rural track he attend meetings a month with students and professors. At the meetings they discuss issues relevant to rural primary care. He is also exposed to rural primary care through his Foundations of Doctoring Preceptorship. This is an agreement where first and second year students work with primary care physicians about 40 hours per semester. His current preceptor works in family practice in Strasburg, Colorado that has given Stephen early exposure to primary care in a small rural community health clinic environment. Stephen has volunteered with a free safety net immunization clinic, a mock interview day for minority pre-med students, and the Colorado AHEC Program free health screening booth at the 2011 National Western Stock Show. His summer plans include working with the Colorado AHEC Program Summer Health Careers Institute, a week in Alamosa for the Rural Immersion week and four weeks working with Family Medicine preceptor in a small Colorado town. He has yet to decide his specialty, but right now he is most interested in rural Family Practice.
