Health Screenings and Community Outreach

National Western Stock Show Health Screenings

The Colorado AHEC Program in association with the  University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and El Pomar Foundation is hosting a free health screening for children and adults August 23 to September 2, 2019.

The health screening booth will be staffed by volunteers committed to improving access to healthcare in Colorado and will include health professions students from various disciplines supervised by licensed healthcare providers. Approximately 500,000 attendees visit the Colorado State Fair and we anticipate screening 2,000 participants, with many more receiving health education information.

The Goals of this project are to provide:
1.  A fun interprofessional, hands-on learning opportunity for health professions students.
2.  Students exposure to rural and underserved populations
3.  Rural and underserved population health screenings and health education information, not otherwise available.

We offer Health Screenings free of charge, we rely heavily on sponsorships to accomplish this.  Please contact Matt Hess at for more information or if you care to donate directly by check you can mail your much-appreciated donation to:

Thank you for considering sponsoring this event!!

We could not offer this great service to the community without our extraordinary volunteers. Volunteers are needed for the exhibit from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.  Clinicians are needed to oversee students in this unique training opportunity!
  • Licensed Providers (we need you!!)
  • Non-Clinical, lay community
  • Faculty and Staff
  • Health Professions students, such as, but not limited to:
    • Dental Students
    • Medical Students
    • Nursing Students
    • Pharmacy Students
    • Physical Therapy Students
    • Physician Assistant Students
    • Public Health Students
There are multiple daily shifts. Shifts last 4 hours. There is some overlap in time to allow for the shift change. Volunteers must register online.

Training is required for all students (if you volunteered for the State Fair or NWSS  you are set!)
Volunteers will also have the opportunity to visit the Colorado State Fair on the day they volunteer.   Make plans to come early before your shift or stay after your shift to enjoy the State Fair!
