Rural Immersion Experience

Rural Immersion Experience

The Interdisciplinary Rural Immersion Week is an exploration of healthcare in a rural community. The week helps health professions students examine the challenges unique to practice in rural settings. Approximately 20 students from varying disciplines including medicine, physician assisting, nursing, pharmacy, public health, dental medicine and psychology take part in the immersion week. Spouses may also attend as participants since consideration of a rural career is a family and lifestyle decision.

This all-expenses-paid week includes activities such as touring the community, meeting with community members and experiencing what a rural community has to offer, all with an eye toward assessing health, in the broadest sense of the word.

Community exploration includes focus on:

  • Acute care
  • Community and economy
  • The criminal justice and law enforcement system
  • The education system
