Monica's interest in all things biology was sparked by growing up in rural Puerto Rico, surrounded by nature, catching lizards and with a cow in her backyard. She got her BS from University of Puerto Rico in Bayamon and her PhD from Harvard University.

She is currently the Associate Director of Diversity and Communication Training for iBiology and the Director for Communication and Science Outreach at Ciencia Puerto Rico.

As a PhD scientist-turned-communicator, she uses online technologies, storytelling, community-building, and cultural relevance to make science more accessible and inclusive. Her work focuses on empowering individuals, both scientists and non-experts, through bilingual science outreach, communication, education, and mentoring.

She recently released a series of videos highlighting diversity in science: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/voices/rethinking-the-narrative-of-diversity-in-science/
