Questions frequently asked by graduates

 Q: Do my guests need tickets for the ceremony?

No, tickets are not issued for commencement. There is no limit to the number of guests you may invite. Seating is first-come, first-served.3

 Q: Am I required to attend the ceremony?

Commencement is an optional celebration of the completion of your degree. Attendance is not mandatory.

 Q: I have submitted my diploma application. Do I still have to register for the ceremony?

​Yes, you must register for the ceremony as well as apply to graduate. Registering for the ceremony confirms your participation and reserves your cap and gown.12

 Q: When and where do I pick up my cap and gown?

​Graduates and faculty can pick up regalia on Thursday, December 14 between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of the 600-seat auditorium in Ed 2 South (just outside the bookstore). 

Regalia (hoods and gowns) will be returned immediatley after the ceremony to Lower Lobby A of the Colorado Convention Center.


 Q: How do I get my diploma?

Graduates of the Physical Therapy and Anesthesiologist Assistant programs will receive diplomas following the ceremony. College of Nursing and Graduate School students should follow the instructions below:

Diplomas may be given out only after the degree is awarded.  Degrees are awarded once all grades have been posted and the program has approved the awarding of the degree.  As long as there are no holds on the student’s account, diplomas may be picked up in the Office of the Registrar (Education II North, Room 3204) Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., and again 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Please make sure to bring legal photo identification - credit cards are not a valid form of identification.
If the graduate wishes to have a friend or family member pick up their diploma, they must provide a signed letter which includes student name, student identification number, type of degree and when it was awarded.  The letter must specifically state the student is giving the Office of the Registrar permission to release the diploma to the designated person.  The person picking up the diploma will need to provide bring identification with them when they pick up the graduate’s diploma.

If a note does not contain a signature, the diploma cannot be released. On the request please include the graduate’s student identification number, printed mailing address, and name (in addition to the graduate’s signature), specify the type of degree that was awarded and when it was awarded.  
Diplomas mailed within the United States are mailed Certified Mail which will require a signature upon receipt.
Please include a check or money order made out to 'University of Colorado' in the amount of $15 for addresses within the United States or a U.S. territory and $42 for addresses in Canada. Contact Barbara Sanchez at for the cost of mailing to other international destinations.

 Q: I will have guests attending commencement who are elderly or need ADA assistance. What kind of accommodations are available?

​Please visit the ADA Accommodations​ page for information about parking, shuttles and reserved seating for guests who require assistance.6

 Q: Where can I park?

The Colorado Convention Center has 1,000 parking spaces and charges $12 for up to 8 hours. Free parking will also be provided in lots on the Auraria Campus, across Speer Boulevard. ADA parking is located on all three levels of the CCC garage.

     Q: How can I order graduation announcements?

    Graduation announcements are available through CB Grad Announcements. You may order announcements at www.cbgrad.com10

     Q: Can I purchase regalia instead of renting it?

    Contact Nathan Hedrick at Willsie Cap & Gown at 785-410-5734 or to ask about buying regalia. Graduates who purchase regalia will register normally. The rental fee will be applied to your purchase. 11

     Q: Where are the post-commencement receptions held?

    ​Receptions are hosted by the programs immediately following the ceremony in these locations:
    Anesthesiology - CCC, Room 107-109
    College of Nursing - CCC, Room 201-207
    Graduate School - CCC, Room 301-303
    Physical Therapy - CCC, Room 401-404
