As a result of Senate Bill 16-135 being signed into law in 2016, new opportunities exist for the expansion of pharmacy practice in Colorado. Significantly, the groundbreaking new law expands collaborative pharmacy practice and allows for the development of statewide drug therapy protocols to be carried out by pharmacists.
Two statewide protocols have emerged and been approved in the state of Colorado including self-administered hormonal contraception and smoking cessation therapy. Under these statewide protocols, pharmacists with the appropriate required training may prescribe medications.
