Interview Day Information


Congratulations on receiving an invitation to interview at University of Colorado School of Medicine!

We hope you will choose to accept your interview and visit the campus to learn more about what we have to offer you as you enter your medical training. The interview process gives us the opportunity to get to know you a little better by going beyond what we have read about you on your application. It also allows you to get a feel for the campus and its facilities, ask us questions, and meet some of the faculty, staff, and current medical students. 

 What You Need to Do

  1. You have received an email invitation from the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM) which included instructions for scheduling your interview. Please follow the instructions and you will receive a confirmation email for your interview date.  If you need to request a new interview date, withdraw your application, or have any questions, please contact the Admissions Office at 303-724-6407, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

  2. You may wish to print these pages as they have all the information you will need to plan and attend your interview at the CU-SOM.

 Interview Day Schedule

7:45 – 8:15 am
Check In
  • Please report to the designated interview room location (exact building/room will be listed in the email communication you receive prior to your visit) where you will provide a photo ID at check-in.  There will be signs on the entrance doors of the building to help direct you to the room.  Lunch is scheduled at 11:35 AM, so we recommend you eat breakfast before you arrive.    
  • W​e will provide you with a nametag and a personal agenda, giving you specific information with interview times and locations.

8:15 – 8:30 am 
Welcome

  • You will be provided an overview of the agenda for the interview day and a welcome by the Assistant Dean of Admissions​

8:40 – 10:00 am
Group Activity / Curriculum Presentation
  • Half of you will participate in a group exercise observed by two members of the Interview Subcommittee (40 minutes), while the other half listens to a Curriculum presentation (40 minutes).  The groups will then switch roles. 

10:00 - 10:15 am 

Break


10:15 – 11:35 am
Group Interview / Financial Aid & Colorado Springs Branch Presentation
  • Half of you will participate in a group interview which will consist of 3 interviewees and 2 interview subcommittee members (40 minutes), while the other half listens to a Financial Aid presentation (20 minutes) and a Colorado Springs Branch presentation (20 minutes).  The groups will then switch roles. 

11:35 am – 12:10 pm
Lunch with Current Students
  • Lunch will be provided while you meet with current medical students who will answer any questions you may have regarding a student’s perspective. 

12:20 – 2:30 pm
Individual Interview / Campus Tour
  • Half of you will participate in your individual interview with 2 interview subcommittee members (15 minutes), while the other half takes a campus tour with current students (60 minutes).  The groups will then switch roles. 

2:30 pm – 2:45 pm

Closing Remarks
  • We will wrap up the interview day and answer any final questions you may have

Your day will be complete by 3 pm.


If you applied to the Rural Track, your application will be reviewed by the Director of the program. Applicants with the strongest indication of future primary care practice in rural Colorado may be contacted separately to schedule an in-person meeting with the Director of the Rural Track. This meeting is 20-30 minutes in length and is typically scheduled between noon-4pm the day before the admissions interview. Decision on acceptance to the Rural Track is made following acceptance to the School of Medicine.​

 Travel Information

We have offered a number of suggestions below for ground transportation. You may also visit RTD-Denver for transportation information for the entire Denver Metro Area, including all public transit systems and links to ground transportation to and from the Denver airport. For customized transit routing using the RTD or Google Trip Planner please select the Landmark tab on your destination, from the first drop down menu select Hospitals and Clinics and on the second drop down select Anschutz Medical – Fitzsimons Campus.
 
If you are arriving by air

There are several different options you can consider for transportation when traveling to and from Denver International Airport. For contact information for van services, car rentals, and other transportation options please look at DIA’s Ground Transportation suggestions or for public transit you can use RTD’s skyRide.
 
Driving to the interview

The University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus is located in the east central part of the metro Denver/Aurora area approximately 4 blocks west of I-225 and Colfax Avenue. The main entrance is north of Colfax Avenue on Aurora Boulevard but to park on campus you should follow the directions given below.

East on Colfax Ave. approximately 10 miles to Quentin St.
Turn left on Quentin St. (just past Peoria St.) to E. Montview Blvd.
Turn right on E. Montview Blvd. to Uvalda Court
Turn right on Uvalda Court to the Georgetown Parking Lot
From Denver International Airport
South on Peña Blvd. until it runs into I-70; west on I-70.
Merge onto I-225 (exit 282) to Colfax Ave. (exit 10 - the first exit).
Turn right on Colfax Ave. to Fitzsimmons Parkway
Turn right (west) about 2 blocks to Fitzsimmons Parkway

The “G” Georgetown lot accommodates visitors for a fee of $5.00 per day payable at the kiosk upon arrival. Place your paid receipt on the dashboard of your vehicle.
Interviews are held in the Education 1 Building slightly southwest of Georgetown lot.

 Where to Stay

Student Housing
If you are interested in staying with a current medical student the evening before your interview, please complete the questions in this Google Doc. After you fill out the form you well receive a response from Prospective Student Representatives, David Gamble and Sanju Garimella, and they will help set you up with a current student. Please fill out this form as soon as possible; at least two weeks' notice is preferred. If you have any questions or problems with the form feel free to contact David and Sanju directly at DAVID.GAMBLE@UCDENVER.EDU and ​SANJANA.GARIMELLA@UCDENVER.EDU. Your assigned host will contact you the week of your interview date to make arrangements.  Please note, we will do everything possible to arrange a student host for you, but it is not guaranteed.  We will let you know if a host has not been arranged so you can find alternative lodging.  ​

Hotels
Below you will find a few hotels that we recommend that offer special rates to Anschutz Medical Campus visitors and that provide shuttle service to the campus.  Please mention that you will need a ride to the Anschutz Campus when you check in: 

  • ​​​​Spring Hill Suites - Denver Aurora/Fitzsimons Location – This would be a good option if you are looking for convenience because this hotel is located across E. Colfax from the campus. When calling for a reservation, please request booking rate SRTS and SRTV (phone reservations only). Spring Hill Suites also provides car service for $45 each way from the airport DIA. The car service can also pick up at the RTD line bus AT off Colfax at the Regional Depot for $8.00 each way.  
  • Hyatt Regency Aurora-Denver Conference Center​ – this would be a good option if you are looking for convenience because this hotel is located across E. Colfax from the campus. Please use the Residency Rate code found on the Hyatt Regency Rate Flyer.  
  • Holiday Inn - Denver East - Stapleton Location – This would be a good option if you are looking to see where some current students live and are planning to spend a little time around Denver.
  • Cambria Suites - Denver Airport Location, the discount code is already provided through the corresponding link. This would be a good option if you have limited time in Denver and are looking to stay close to the airport.

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many applicants interview at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine?
    During the 2017-2018 admissions season we interviewed 642 candidates for admission.
  • What time does the interview day begin and where do I check-in?
    You need to check in between 7:45 - 8:15 am in the designated location. Please look for signs at the entrances.
  • How many interviews will I have?
    You will participate in three activities: one observed group activity, one group interview, and one traditional interview. All observations and interviews are conducted by the Interview Subcommittee which includes faculty members, a clinical staff members, non-clinical staff members, community stakeholders, and student members. 
  • What can I expect during the interviews?
    The interviewer will evaluate your performance during the interviews and activity itself. After interview day, your file will then be reviewed by the Admissions Committee for a final determination.
  • How many applicants interview on a given day?
    Sixty applicants are interviewed each interview day. You will have a chance to meet with the other applicants between interviews and in the afternoon during lunch and the campus tour.
  • I have had changes to my AMCAS application. Can I send updates to my application?
    We do not accept any updates before, during or after interview day.  If you have updates, please submit them through AMCAS.
  • Does CU-SOM provide breakfast and lunch?
    Coffee and water will be available upon check in, but breakfast will not be provided.  Please make sure you eat before arriving; lunch will be provided around 11:30 am.
  • Can I sit in on classes?
    We do not allow applicants to sit in on classes as the lecture schedule varies week to week and we want to allow our current students an optimal learning environment with limited disruption to their schedules.
  • What do I need to bring with me to the interview day?
    Please bring a photo ID for check in.
  • What can I do with my luggage during my interview day?
    You can bring your luggage with you to the check-in room; it will remain there all day until you are ready to leave.
  • Do you have information on student housing?
    We do not have a formal, on-campus housing program. For more information visit Student Housing.
  • What is the best way to travel to School of Medicine from the airport?
