General Surgery Residency

Application Process

Residents at Grand Rounds

Please see the following criteria for the University of Colorado General Surgery Residency Program.

Apply on ERAS = Electronic Residency Application System, through the medical school’s Dean’s office with the standard application items. Preferred set of recommendation letters includes 3 faculty LORs plus a Chair's letter.

ECFMG is used by foreign medical school students. Residents in our program must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or possess the appropriate documentation to allow Resident to legally train at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. We have a few ECFMGs in our program.

No minimum score is required. University of Colorado looks at the entire application when considering applicants. We do not have specific criteria so emails inquiring about same will not be answered due to workload involved.

USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 should both be taken.

Over 1200 people will apply for the University of Colorado Surgical Residency Program through ERAS prior to the match.  Interview invitations are sent out to about 120 applicants. Up to 100 will actually be interviewed. Interviews are done on Mondays from early November through January.

Participation in research years or an educational year is strongly recommended by the Program.

Applications are due November 15th. Invitations to interview begin in September.

Positions for PGY 2, 3, 4 are only available should there become an opening due to attrition. If available, those positions would be posted on the APDS website. Due to the workload of the program, inquires about positions without an APDS posting will not be answered.

The following PGY-1 positions are available:  10 Categorical, 21 Preliminary Surgery

Medical Students interested in doing a sub-internship at University of Colorado should apply electronically through VSAS and send to Sean Spellman in Dean Garrity’s office. The school’s extern page is  It lists CU’s requirements and has the link to VSAS.
