Susan A. Boackle MD
Assistant Division Director, Associate Professor of Medicine
Dr. Boackle is interested in the etiology and pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), with the long-term goal of developing new targeted therapies for this disease. She is currently investigating the role of complement receptor 2 as a lupus susceptibility gene in humans, and is studying the functional effects of gene variants that have been associated with disease. She is also studying genetic and serologic biomarkers in patients with lupus as well as their first-degree relatives in order to identify new targets for therapy.

Kevin Deane MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Dr Deane is currently working on a large-scale study to understand how genetic and environmental factors influence the development of rheumatoid arthritis, and how blood-based markers can be used to predict the future onset of rheumatoid arthritis. He is also investigating how specific areas of the body, such as the lung, contribute to the development of autoimmunity. Additionally, in cooperation with a Colorado-based non-profit health-fair organization, Dr. Deane is investigating approaches to screening the population for undiagnosed rheumatoid arthritis, and how such screening can be used to identify people that may be at risk for rheumatoid arthritis in the future.

Jason Kolfenbach MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Dr. Kolfenbach's primary research interest is in the natural history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) development, specifically the transition from early inflammatory arthritis to persistent disease. By understanding which factors are involved in the persistence of joint inflammation, we may be able to identify those individuals with the highest risk for progression toward RA and offer earlier therapeutic intervention. Dr. Kolfenbach also has an interest in scleroderma and works in the UCH Scleroderma Clinic. He is currently involved in an observational study of patients with scleroderma with early pulmonary hypertension (PHAROS Study), as well as an interventional trial for the treatment of digiital ulcers.
