ABOUT ME:

Dr. Hill graduated from Western University in 1987 and did his residency at Truman Medical Center-East/UMKC. He is a board certified family physician with sub-specialty boards in primary care sports medicine. Beginning his career at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he returned to his home state of Colorado in 1994 and joined the DFM. His practice initially focused on Women’s Health and Wellness and included operative obstetrics. He has delivered over 1000 babies and has in depth knowledge in obstetrical ultrasound, prenatal care and exercise as it relates to pregnancy.

In 1998, he created the primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado. This program has grown significantly and is now one of the best of its kind in the country. He was one of the first sports medicine doctors in the United States to use musculoskeletal ultrasound and has developed many of the approaches and techniques which are now accepted as the standard of care. Nationally, Dr. Hill is a popular speaker in the areas of musculoskeletal ultrasound and sports medicine and is a team physician at the University of Denver.

An athlete himself, he has competed in road and mountain bike racing, triathlons and running races. He has run the Boston marathon and was a 2010 Leadman, completing all the Leadville races in a single season including the Leadville 100 Ultramarathon and Mountain bike race. He has been married to Gail for 31 years and they have two daughters in college.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

The use of high frequency ultrasound to assess muscle glycogen content is a rapid, practical and non-invasive method. This should open new pathways in the field of sports nutrition and performance as offering an alternative way to quantify muscle glycogen stores in the research areas of muscle metabolism and nutritional replacement.

Currently, the only validated, standardized approach to measure muscle glycogen reserves involves muscle biopsy. Rarely, can results be quickly obtained to benefit an athlete who may need to consume more carbohydrates an hour before their competition. Using high frequency ultrasound to assess muscle glycogen content is an approach which is rapid, practical, portable and non-invasive.

Many other areas of diagnostic and interventional ultrasound
