The GSDRC is
a consortium of the University of Cologne (Cologne, Germany), Columbia
University Medical Center (New York, USA), Keio University School of
Medicine (Tokyo, Japan), the University of Colorado Denver (Aurora, USA),
Dundee University (Scotland,
UK), and the Skin Research Institute of Singapore (Singapore).
One of the
objectives of the GSDRC member institutions is to collaborate in promoting
skin-related research. From July 28-30,
2014, the University of Colorado Denver hosted the first GSDRC summer school at
the Anschutz Medical Campus. This highly
successful summer school was attended by twenty-eight graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows representing the six member institutions. The primary focus of the summer school was
the design of appropriate models to study skin diseases, and included lectures
on stem cell-based modeling of skin diseases, animal models for skin diseases,
and stem cell-based therapies (see announcement and program for more details).
The summer school was concluded with a dinner at The Fort Restaurant.
also provided an opportunity for the coordinators of the six collaborating institutes
to discuss future events and funding opportunities. The coordinators included: David Bickers
(Columbia University), Carien Niessen (University of Cologne), Louise Stanley
(Dundee University), Akiharu Kubo (Keio University), Maurice Van Steensel (Skin
Research Institute of Singapore) and Maranke Koster (University of Colorado
