The Department of Dermatology deals with all aspects of the biology and diseases of the skin. This site is for visitors seeking the latest information on treatment, training, resources and services, and research in our Department.
The Dermatology and Cutaneous Oncology clinics, located at the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion on the Fitzsimons campus, offer the latest modes of treatment. Additionally, we cover all consults in Dermatology at the University of Colorado Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center, Denver Veterans Administration Hospital, and The Children's Hospital Colorado. The Department maintains close connections with the University of Colorado Cancer Center.
Education and Research
We are strongly committed both to education and research. Our residency program balances patient care, teaching, and scientific investigation. We offer fellowships in Dermatological and Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Dermatopathology, and Pediatric Dermatology. Additionally, our longstanding NIH-funded Training Grant in Immunodermatology expands career opportunities in academic dermatology for both M.D. and Ph.D. postdoctoral fellows. We also offer clinical and laboratory research electives to third- and fourth-year medical students.
Four of our faculty members (Drs. Box, Koch, Koster, Roop) are founding members of the Charles C. Gates Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Biology Program at UCD. The goal of this multidisciplinary program is to conduct basic research into stem cell biology of different organ systems, and to use this knowledge to develop new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of diseases such as cancer. Two areas of active research in the program are skin cancer stem cells and the role of stem cells in inherited blistering skin diseases.
The research mission of our faculty is to elucidate the molecular and cellular basis of diseases affecting the skin and to apply this new knowledge to prevention, diagnosis, and cure of these diseases. Research activities include molecular biology and immunology of the skin, epidemiology, genetic determinants of skin diseases including melanoma and other skin cancers, and development of approaches to gene therapy in the skin.
