Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death affecting both
men and women. It is important to be screened for colorectal cancer through
endoscopic screening or high sensitivity stool testing, because most people
with colorectal cancer have no symptoms. Endoscopic screening can find and
prevent colorectal cancer by locating and removing polyps (small growths that can
develop into cancer over time). High sensitivity stool testing (FOBT/FIT) can
detect cancer at an earlier stage by finding hidden blood in the stool.
The Colorado Colorectal Screening Program is a statewide program that
partners with health care providers to provide no cost colorectal screening to
the underserved.
The Program, coordinated through the University of Colorado Cancer Center,
has partnership with more than 65 community health clinics across Colorado.
These community clinics offer no cost endoscopic screenings (most often
colonoscopy) to those who qualify.
The Program is focused on restoring
endoscopic screening throughout the state, including some treatment and patient
navigation support. The Program will also continue to support comprehensive
cancer screening, including high sensitivity fecal occult blood testing
(FOBT/FIT) and will begin to improve partnerships with other chronic disease
prevention programs.
