Clinical Research: Metabolic Control Study

Effect of Metabolic Control at Onset of Diabetes on Progression of Type 1 Diabetes

Principal Investigator: Robert Slover, MD

COMIRB # 09-0293

The aim of this study is to determine if every tight blood sugar control at the onset of Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) will keep the remaining beta cells from dying, and help to keep the body making its own insulin. If successful, this will not cure the diabetes, but it may make the blood sugar easier to control for a long time. Two-thirds of study participants will be put on an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor to be used for 2 years.

Who can participate in this study?

  • At least 10 years old and less than 46 years old
  • Have been recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes
  • Are within 1-7 days of insulin start

Why should I volunteer for the study?

If you decide to take part in the study, you will be a very important part of the research effort that will provide answers about how to best treat patients who develop type 1 diabetes.
