In addition to the rare books, the library owns a substantial collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century artifacts. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine. She received her PhD in English from the University of Colorado, Boulder, with major emphases in American literature, modern and contemporary drama, and gender studies and completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in medical humanities. Dr. Jones has published and presented extensively on HIV/AIDS and the arts, literature, film and medicine. Her teaching includes both required and elective courses in the humanities and arts for health professions students at the University of Colorado Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses. Cinematic representations have shaped our personal responses, cultural beliefs, and social policies regarding persons with mental illness and those who care for them. This lively presentation begins with the “twin birth” of psychoanalysis and film; examines the now familiar stereotypes of patients, doctors, and treatment (with movie clips); and explores the impact of those stereotypes.
