University Honors and Leadership Maymester in Spain

Cultures of Contemporary Spain

This course examines the construction of contemporary Spanish identities within the context of the country's transformation from an anachronistic dictatorship to a dynamic democracy. Social, economic and political questions will be explored, such as the plural nationalities of Spain, and the role of Spain within the European Community. Cultural topics, like feminism, immigration and urbanism, will also be considered through creative sources such as literature, architecture, photography, art, and film. The class will consist of three thematic blocks, each one of them corresponding with the three weeks of Maymester instruction: Contemporary History of Spain, Multicultural Spain, and The Multifaceted Image of Spain through its Cultural Production.
