Distance Learning Success:

Heidi Rogers - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

What Program Are You Studying?

I am finishing my DNP this spring – I started in the Spring of 2010 – and took several semesters off during the 5 years.

first experience with online classes?

Yes it was, since I started I also started teaching on line for another college.

Why CU Denver?

I chose CU because it is an excellent nursing school, I also got in state tuition from the WICHE program with New Mexico – and there wasn’t another program in NM.

But mostly because CU is where I did my undergraduate degree in humanities and I have always been very fond of the school.

Biggest Educational Triumph?

I'd say my biggest educational triumph is that I made it through the biostatistics class taught in the MPH program in one piece.

Where have you visited while in class?

So I take my laptop with me everywhere, I think most striking was I go every summer to the telluride blue grass festival and so I would go to the library while camping there.

I also took a class while I was on vacation in Europe and I had a paper due, so I got up early every morning – which was easy with the time change and I wrote my paper and drank cappuccinos.

Luckily I had kids who like to sleep in – so I got 4 hours of work in before anyone got up. We camp a lot and I have also done classes in my tent with my cell phone hotspot - and I’m on ski patrol and I have also spent time in the patrol room working on classes

What Barriers Have You Had to Face?

I have been working full time, I have two kids and I moved to a different town while I was in this program.

What Stands Out In Your Experience?

What is interesting is that we were able to build a community in this program, I now have all these amazing friends and colleagues – through our discussions in our classes I really got to know some of the professors well and they have been a great resource for me as I have made my way through this program.
