CU Online Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 Faculty Seminar Schedule and Center for Faculty Development Workshops

Listed below is the schedule of seminars available through CU Online that discuss online course development and faculty delivery using eCollege and Blackboard on the Denver Campus (DC) and the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC).

Most CU Online Seminars are working lunch workshops - lunch will be provided.  Please let us know if you require a vegetarian meal.

Cheap and Easy Video

Once the domain of big budgets, big equipment and big egos, thanks to digital technology, anyone can be a part-time Coppola or Spielberg. Shoot video with your mobile phone, edit with simple desktop software and distribute online to share with your students. This session will provide a practical and concise tour of the tools and skills you need to get into video production. Best of all, you won’t have to spend a lot of time or money producing your next masterpiece.

Getting Started with Blackboard

Come and learn the basics of Blackboard 9! This quick overview covers how to set up your course shell, add documents, and add interactive tools. See also how to create tests and quizzes to assess your students, and manage all of your assignments in the Grade Center. If you have never used Blackboard before or want a refresher on the basics, this is the workshop for you!

Pulse Pen Workshop

This is not your parent’s ball point pen.

Using a Pulse Pen, what you write or draw on the Pulse paper is translated into a digital format, complete with a recording of your voice. Quickly record demos and walkthroughs, from equations and illustrations to complex diagrams and charts. With a few clicks, your pen and paper masterpiece translates into something ready for the Web.

This workshop will provide an overview of how the architecture program is using this smart pen technology to teach structural systems, which is mathematics-based material systems.  It will examine the advantages, disadvantages and teaching strategy of this engineering coursework and how it can apply to other mathematics based courses.

"Microgrants are available to cover the cost of the Pulse Pen for eligible faculty who will be using it to teach online or hybrid courses.

Online Course Development Workshop using eCollege

This hands-on workshop will give you the tools and strategies you need to develop a successful online course. The workshop is divided into sessions that cover the critical aspects of developing and teaching an eCollege online course, such as; Elements of a successful online course, Day to day details you should know, Designing online syllabi and announcements, Assessing students, Crafting student discussions, and Assessing your course. During each session you’ll see some instructional best practices and apply these practices by adding new material to your own course. You will be given your own eCollege course shell to practice with, but you can also use a course you’re already developing. If you are new to online instruction, you should take the entire workshop. If you are an experienced online instructor, you can attend only the specific modules that interest you.
