- Before designing your poster, check the conference poster size limits and orientation (horizontal or vertical).
- In some case your may not have enough material or to fill the space. Scale your poster accordingly to the amount of material or data you have.
- Open up PowerPoint, select new presentation.
- PowerPoint 2003 users, select page set-up. PowerPoint 2007 users select design and then page set-up.
- Enter the size you want your poster to be. (For a poster 44 x 56 inches, enter 56 for width and 44 for height) This is the maximum dimensions that PowerPoint will allow. Click on OK.
- Posters over 56” in either direction will need to be designed half size to stay within PowerPoint’s size limit. (For a poster 44 x 90 inches, enter 45 for width and 22 for height) We will double the poster size upon request.
- When designing in the half size method, your text would also need to be in half size, (Example: 24pt text would now be 12pt. When printed to full size the 12pt text would become 24pt).
- Select the color of your background. Be selective on your color scheme, it affects the way viewers perceive your work.
- Each poster should have a title. Poster titles should be at least 90-point (90pt) to 100-point (100pt).
- Authors and School names should be 72-point (72pt) to 85-point (85pt).
- Section titles should be 38-point (38pt) to 40-point (40pt).
- Viewers can't read small type from a distance. To be able to readable from 5 feet use 24-point (24pt) to 30-point (30pt) for your main text (However references may be 16-point (16pt) to 18-point (18pt).
- A font can be either "serif" like Times Roman or "sans serif" like Ariel. In general, fonts like Times Roman are better for the text while Arial is good for titles and to label the figures.
- If using symbols, highlight the text and change it to a symbol from the text selection. Using the insert symbol feature may or may not work.
- Select the text tool box, enter your caption and then select the color of the text. (Example: ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION, METHODS, etc).
- Select the text tool box again, enter your text and then select the color of the text. You may resize the text boxes by highlighting the box and pulling from one of the four corners or from the center of the box.
- Once you have the first boxes drawn, select both boxes, then copy and paste, align and then enter the new caption and text. Continue doing this till you have all your captions and text entered.
- Illustrations and photographs should be clear and properly proportioned. Use high resolution images (150 dpi to 300 dpi); JPG, PNG, GIF or TIFF images are best. ( Please keep in mind, images which are used off the web are only 72 dpi and will be very pixilated and blurred when enlarged on the final print) (To check resolution, view your image at 100%).
- Use insert picture from file to bring in your image. To resize the image, click on one of the four corners of your image. Drag out or in from this corner, depending on how you want to size the image. This will help to keep the image in proportion.
- If copying and pasting Excel charts, graphs, or other objects in from other programs and are having trouble just using the paste feature. Copy the file, then use the Paste Special feature and select as a Excel file or Picture (Windows Meta File or Enhanced Metafile). Selecting the Windows Meta File or Enhanced Metafile makes it a vector graphic that allows you to expand or reduce your image to any size without pixilation on your poster. Pasting as an Excel file will allow you to double click on the image and change data while it’s in your poster.
- Upon completion, you may submit your poster in PowerPoint. We also accept Photoshop, Corel Draw, PDF, TIF and EPS files. If poster was created on a MAC, please submit in a PDF File, unless the fonts are compatible with a PC. Files may be E-mailed, hand carried on a CD, Thumb drive, Jump drive, or portable drive to my office.
