Leadership Through a Third Eye: Costa Rica

Maymester 2015

"Leadership Through a Third Eye" is an Ethnic Studies Course that will introduce students to both traditional and non-traditional leadership models. We will measure the impact these different models have on the citizens, resources, and the dissemination of services within Costa Rica. This course will offer a multi-layered lens of leadership through the experience of American and Costa Rican leaders by exploring what factors influenced their leadership styles and decision-making process.

Upon completion of this course, participants should have an understanding of the following:
•   Understand basic leadership styles
•   Introduced to Costa Rican cultures and how they impact governmental policies
•   Critical observation of local traditions with an emphasis on how communities address urgent needs with minimum resources.
•   Critical observation of Costa Rican current issues related to social justice and how they compare to current issues in the United States. 
•   Critical Analysis of the intersectionality between class, ethnicity, gender, religion, and cultural affiliations and its impact on the everyday lives of Tanzanian citizens.
•   Have a fundamental understanding of problem solving A basic knowledge of different critical thinking strategies
•   Will have a basic understanding of how leadership and decision making can impact the social world
•   A basic understanding of the social dynamics of leadership by critically analyzing different hierarchal systems 
•   How to develop a personal and organizational mission statement
•   A basic understanding of ethics and values
•   A basic understanding of negotiating
