Bridge Funding for Grant Lapses

School of Medicine Research Development

Bridge Funding

The bridge funding program of the CU School of Medicine was established in 2006 when reductions in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget began to threaten faculty survival.  Its purpose is to provide support to principal investigators while they reapply for funding.  The Bridge Funding Committee is advisory to the Dean.

The Office of Research Development calls for applications for reviews in April and November.

A total of 135 awards have been made to 113 faculty members through April 2014 in a total amount of $6.629 million.  Follow-up is available for 96 faculty members who have received at least one award for a total of $5.6 million in bridge funding from March 2006 through April 2013.  To date about 77 percent have received a return on investment in total research dollars of about 11-fold.
