As we begin the 2014-2015 academic year, I am struck by how many opportunities are opening for us to become more integrated into the overall health care mission of our hospitals and campus. All four of our teaching hospitals are asking for more of our efforts. University of Colorado Hospital asked Psychiatry to work with Neurology to help their patients with non-epileptic seizures. Children’s Hospital Colorado is requesting additional Child and Adolescent Psychiatry services for its adolescent pregnancy program. Denver Health Medical Center is expanding services for adolescents with cannabis use issues. The Denver VA Medical Center, in response to Congressional mandate, is rapidly increasing a wide variety of mental health services for veterans. The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is collaborating with the Department of Psychiatry to expand and improve mental health services for students. All these services involve attending faculty working with psychiatry residents and fellows and other trainees. Many recent residency and fellowship graduates have joined this effort as new faculty members, but a number also left in June for sub-specialty fellowships on both coasts. It is gratifying to see our graduates pursue a wide range of career opportunities; I hope that those who have left will someday come back with their experiences to share. Every fall, I take weekend call at University of Colorado Hospital with our psychiatry residents, caring for patients in the Emergency Department and on the medical and surgical services. I am always impressed with our residents’ competence and confidence, which go hand-in-hand, and the high regard in which they are held by our physician colleagues in other departments. It is not surprising that we are being asked to do more, and we are ready for the challenge.
