The Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect improves the care and well-being of all children by strengthening families, communities, and the systems that serve them. We believe abuse and neglect are preventable, children are resilient, and supportive care can bring health and hope.

Highlights & News

May is National Foster Care Month

A month set aside to acknowledge foster parents, family members, volunteers, mentors, policymakers, child welfare professionals, pediatricians, and other members of the community who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections.


Foster kids receive free haircuts, styling and a boost to self-esteem  at Kempe-sponsored event. Roots of Change Sunday, March 15, 2015. See 9News coverage here.


Richard Krugman, MD was honored by the newly renamed Richard D. Krugman Conference Hall on campus. Formerly called the Trivisible Room, the space on the second floor of Research Complex 2 has been renamed in honor of the School of Medicine’s longest-serving dean and the university’s vice chancellor for health affairs, who is stepping down March 31st after 25 years.

Richard Krugman, MD and Dan Theodorescu, MD, PhD were honored for lifetime achievement and innovation in health care, respectively, at the Denver Post Strength in Health awards.

Donald C. Bross, JD, PhD, was selected for the 2015 Thomas Jefferson Award by the University of Colorado.

We welcome Sasha Svendsen, MD to our Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship Program.
